Job Title:  Director, Transportation                                   Wage/Hour Status: Exempt

Reports to:  Executive Director of Operations                                         Pay Grade: Admin Pay 7

Dept. /School: Transportation                                                                 Days: 227

Supervises:  Transportation Supervisors, Lead Vehicle Mechanic, Operations Supervisor

 

Primary Purpose: To provide oversight and operation of the department, ensuring the proper administration of the school district transportation system in accordance with state/federal laws, local policies, and the district's mission, vision and guiding principles to ensure the safe and efficient transport of students.       

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Texas Association for Pupil Transportation Certification (TAPT) preferred.
  • ASE School Bus Certification preferred.

 

 

            Special Knowledge Skills:

 

  • Knowledge of applicable laws and regulations, including drug testing; effective routing; fleet maintenance; parts/inventory management; quality principles; driving record must meet both the State’s point requirements and the District’s standard for driving district vehicles; maintain a Texas School Bus Driver Certification; must have satisfactory performance in the District’s safety training program; must pass the DOT/District’s Physical Examination yearly and valid Texas Class “B” CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) with Passenger & School Bus endorsements.
  • Skill in communication and use of computer equipment, including emergency and dispatcher radios.
  • Ability to work with parents and children.
  • Self-motivated, organized, reliable, adaptable
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Must be able to work independently as well as on a team

 

Experience:

 

  • Three years of supervisory experience in transportation operations, preferably with public school districts.

 

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Manage the delivery of transportation services for students and ensure that they are picked up and arrive safely and on time.
  • Oversee preparation and updating of bus routes and schedules for all schools in district and develop plans to meet future transportation needs.
  • Communicate changes in routes and scheduling to campuses and the public when warranted.
  • Coordinate transportation for extracurricular activities and special programs.
  • Assign bus drivers to routes and extracurricular trips and find substitutes, as needed.
  • Oversee repair of all district-owned vehicles and preventive maintenance. Ensure that vehicle repair requests and work orders are prioritized and processed in a timely manner. Contract for outside services that cannot be performed in shop.
  • Monitor fuel deliveries and distribution.
  • Respond to after-hours emergency calls, as needed.
  • Compile, maintain, file, and present all reports, records, and other documents required. Prepare, process and maintain all documents required to verify safety certification and alcohol and drug testing of bus drivers.
  • Ensure that employee time records are accurately maintained and data necessary to process transportation payroll is delivered in a timely manner.
  • Develop and administer budget based on documented needs and ensure that operation is cost effective and funds are managed wisely.
  • Maintain current inventory of supplies and parts and initiate purchases in accordance with budgetary limitations and district policies. Approve and forward invoices for transportation to accounting department.
  • Recommend disposal of obsolete or worn out vehicles and equipment. Recommend purchase of vehicles, as necessary.
  • Implement district's student discipline policies and ensure that expectations about appropriate behavior when using district transportation are communicated to students. Enforce student discipline and suspension of riding privileges for any student who violates rules and regulations.
  • Investigate reported concerns and take appropriate action to resolve issues.
  • Select, train, supervise and evaluate staff and make recommendations relative to assignment, retention, discipline and dismissal.
  • Prepare, review, and revise transportation department job descriptions.
  • Enforce safety standards that conform with state, federal and insurance regulations and develop a program of preventive safety.
  • Assess road conditions and hazards and advise administration about inclement weather conditions that may result in delayed starts or the closing of schools.
  • Investigate school bus accidents and student safety violations.
  • Participate in development of the district's disaster plan and be prepared to take an active role in responding to emergencies, as needed.
  • Attend and make presentations at conferences and school board meetings regarding transportation issues and innovations.
  • Operate buses and other vehicles, as needed.
  • Be positive, patient, and friendly with students, staff, parents, and community members in support the District.
  • Be professional, reliable, organized and friendly.
  • Communicate effectively (verbal and written).
  • Answer telephone calls and e-mails promptly.
  • Maintain positive interaction with students, staff, fellow employees, parents, and community members.
  • Be willing to show empathy towards students, staff, parents, peers and community members.
  • Ability to resolve issues/concerns and troubleshoot (as applicable).
  • Perform any other tasks assigned by the supervisor.

Maintain emotional control under stress. Occasional prolonged or irregular hours. Frequent district wide travel and some state wide travel.
