JOB DESCRIPTION                             Fleet Maintenance Shop Foreman             

 

JOB TITLE:  Fleet Repair Shop Foreman       WAGE/HOUR STATUS:  Non-exempt                   

REPORTS TO:  Director of Transportation     PAY GRADE:  AUX 08

 

DEPARTMENT:  Transportation     DAYS: 244




PRIMARY PURPOSE:

 

  • The Fleet Maintenance Shop Foreman, under the direct supervision of the Fleet Maintenance Manager, will oversee the maintenance and repair of District vehicles, maintain an adequate inventory and distribution process of shop parts and supplies, and monitor the allocation of district resources through the use of the Transportation budget guidelines.

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Education/Certification:

  • High School diploma or GED
  • State Bus Driver’s certification course
  • Valid Texas Commercial Driver’s License - with P/S endorsements
  • Ability to pass annual DOT physical examination and random drug testing 
  • TASBT Diesel Mechanic Certification is preferred
  • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification, preferred

 

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Mechanical aptitude
  • Knowledge of fuel, electrical, hydraulic, oil pressure and lubrication systems
  • Able to perform mechanical repairs with no supervision
  • Computer Skills – Internet, Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Effective organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work cooperatively with people and manage personnel
  • Strong work ethic and excellent attendance record

Minimum Experience:

  • Three years of experience in automotive or related fields, preferred
  • Three years of experience as a diesel mechanic, preferred
  • One to three years experience as a school bus mechanic, preferred 

 

  • Alternatives to the above, as the District finds appropriate




MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

 

Supervisory:

  • Supervises and evaluates all Fleet Mechanics. 
  • Conducts shop meeting regularly for the purpose of:
    • Shop Safety
    • Coordination & organization of labor, materials, and equipment
    • Assignment of work orders as appropriate
  • Assists Fleet Mechanics in the analysis and diagnosis of necessary repair work, including major and minor assemblies, engines, drive trains, components and systems.
  • Diagnoses and determines which repairs may be performed by Fleet Mechanics or which must be outsourced to selected vendors and advises the Transportation Supervisor accordingly and follows Transportation Supervisor’s directives for repairs.  
  • Oversees on-going training and certification requirements for Fleet Mechanics.
  • Coordinates and manages an accurate computerized software system for preventive maintenance schedules for all district-owned vehicles:
  • State Inspections
  • Fleet Vehicle Maintenance and Usage Logs
  • Maintenance Logs for routine maintenance and specific work order repairs
  • Oversees vehicle and equipment parts and supply inventory.
  • Ensures availability of District funds before committing the District financially.
  • Complies with the competitive purchasing requirements of the District.
  • Requisitions, locates, and acquires parts and materials as needed for vehicle repair according to the Transportation Purchasing Guidelines.
  • Coordinates and manages an accurate computerized software system for receipt and issuance of parts and supplies.

 

Mechanical:

  • Assumes responsibility for the safe operation, care and inventory of school district vehicles, tools, and equipment.
  • Responds to emergency vehicle repairs.  Responds to calls after-hours on district-issued phone as needed in emergency situations.
  • Assists in performing technical maintenance such as engine overhauls, complete driveline repairs, transmissions, fuel systems, air conditioner repairs, and electrical systems.
  • Test drives repaired vehicles on public streets.
  • Assumes driver responsibilities when substitute drivers are not available.

 

General:

  • Supports the educational goals of the district.
  • Contributes to the recommendation, implementation, or improvement of operations and policies within the Fleet Maintenance division of the Transportation Department.
  • Follow all safety rules and safety procedures.
  • When needed, will fill in for bus drivers and will safely and efficiently deliver students to and from schools by following assigned bus routes, adhering to established schedules and obeying traffic laws. 
  • Assumes responsibility for personal daily time records.
  • Demonstrates behavior that is professional, ethical and responsible.
  • Attends required staff development as assigned by the Administration and/or Supervisor.
  • Follows all rules, regulations, and policies of the Hurst-Euless-Bedford Independent School District.
  • Performs other functions that may be assigned by the Administration and/or Supervisor.
  • Utilize a systems approach to continuous improvement.




EQUIPMENT USED:

  • Computer and associated office equipment
  • Tools and equipment needed to perform general repair of Transportation and Maintenance vehicles, including (but not limited to) power tools, hydraulic lifts, computers, tire changers, electronic analysis equipment, electrical test equipment, brake lathe, welding equipment and engine hoist
  • School buses and all specialized equipment identified to accommodate special needs students

  • Requires performing tasks standing, walking, bending, kneeling, squatting and lying on back with extended reaching in front of and above body
  • Requires climbing and working on ladders and in pits
  • Requires heavy lifting and carrying while walking
  • Works with hand tools up to 10 lbs. in positions above and below head
  • Uses chemicals and cleaning solvents to maintain and repair equipment
  • Operates school district vehicle daily and must get in and out 10 to 20 times per shift 
  • Works inside and outside
  • Frequent exposure to inclement weather, including heat, cold, rain, and snow
  • Frequent exposure to exhaust fumes, grease, oils, smoke and/or gasses
